Questions
What is the VAT rate in the UAE?
Five per cent. It has applied since 1 January 2018 and is charged on most goods and services.
How do I remove VAT from a total?
Divide the VAT-inclusive total by 1.05. Taking 5% off the total instead is the common mistake — on a total of AED 105 it gives AED 5.25 of VAT rather than the correct AED 5.
When must a business register for VAT?
Registration is mandatory once taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 a year. A business below that but above AED 187,500 may register voluntarily.
Is everything charged at 5%?
No. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt — exports, certain healthcare and education, and some real estate among them. This calculator applies the standard rate only.
